Chief of Defense Forces Samson Mwathethe helped save the situation at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Wednesday night after Interior PS Karanja Kibicho clashed with Deputy President William Ruto.
According to reports, the DP confronted the PS, accusing him of sabotaging his tours across the country.
“And for close to 15 minutes, a visibly angry Ruto is said to have engaged the PS wanting to know why he had allegedly instructed county commissioners and police commanders not to provide security at his functions," reported the People Daily.
It is reported that it took the intervention of Mwathethe to calm the situation before it got out of control.
"It took the intervention of Chief of Defence Forces Gen Samson Mwathethe to calm the situation threatening to turn ugly," the Standard reported.
The scuffle between the two was first reported by People Daily on Friday. The DP is said to have arrived at the airport unexpectedly and lectured the PS for close to 15 mins, without giving him a chance to respond.
“Everyone present including the service commanders were taken by surprise. Nobody uttered a word as the lecture by the visibly angry Ruto continued,” a source told the daily.
The Deputy President's communications director, Emmanuel Tallam, has however dismissed the claims, saying he was not aware of even Ruto being at JKIA.
“That JKIA story is fake. It is a creation of rumour-peddlers of fake news keen to sustain a hopeless narrative,” Tallam said.
