Seeking justice for the oppressed is among the key pillars of Hivisasa. Through our platform, over one thousand writers are able to publish information geared towards finding justice. With this type of information, our readers are able to take collective action and push for justice.

On October 9th, 2018, Hivisasa readers managed to initiate the process of seeking justice for a 10-year-old girl in Garissa who was burned with hot water by her employer. Despite being underage, the girl was employed as a house-help.

The victim identified as Sowda Hassan Ibrahim was burned for allegedly preparing ‘bad’ food for her employer’s family. The minor was also pricked with a sharp object as punishment.

The story was published by Hivisasa through Carson Jnr, a Garissa-based writer.  He was informed of the incident through a tip-off from a friend. On October 7th, the writer visited the victim who was admitted at the Garissa Referral Hospital. Carson interviewed Sowda and corroborated the information with local authorities before the story was published.

Immediately the case was highlighted by Hivisasa, public pressure intensified calling for the arrest of the suspect. On October 9th, residents held demonstrations in Garissa demanding justice for the minor.

The Hivisasa story also attracted the attention of Find Real Me Kenya, an organization that stores data of rogue house helps and employers. The organisation’s aim is to promote safe homes for both domestic workers and employers.

The organisation’s director, Grace Masereti contacted the writer who linked her to the victim's family.Masereti managed to get Sowda’s medical records which were later presented to authorities in Garissa. Local authorities successfully arrested the employer following increased pressure from  Real Find Me and the general public.

The employer is currently out on bail after being charged with assault, promoting child labour and denying a minor the right to education.
