The newly appointed Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture Peter Munya has ordered the Kenya Cooperative Creameries(KCC) to immediately begin buying milk from farmers at 33shs per litre starting from Thursday.
Munya speaking on Wednesday during his first convention a day after being ordained as the newly serving CS for Agriculture, he asserted that it is in liaison with President Uhuru Kenyatta discretion of heightening the milk industry.
He also added that milk will be bought locally for use by the Government of Kenya(GoK) agencies and as relief food.
"Following the President's directive, I have authorised New KCC to immediately start buying milk from farmers at Sh33 per litre. The milk will be processed into powder for strategic food reserve as well as for use by GoK agencies & as relief food. GoK agencies will only buy local milk," Munya asserted.
On Tuesday during the State of the Nation address at Statehouse Mombasa County, President Uhuru promised that the government will allocate Sh500 million to KCC which will be utilized in buying milk from dairy farmers to be remade into powder form for future benefit.
The past prices per litre were between Sh19 and Sh27 at the newly KCC and Brookside farm gate.
