The revelation that 60 babies died at the Kiambu Level Five Hospital in a span of two months has continued to elicit mixed reactions from different factions.
Residents and leaders have questioned the professionalism of the health practitioners tasked with taking care of expectant mothers at the facility.
The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board (KMPDB) has now embarked on an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The probe comes after Kiambu County Health executive Mary Kamau confirmed the number of deaths at the facility but defended the medics at the facility against negligence claims.
KMPDB Chief Executive Officer Daniel Yumbya on Sunday said that the team will shed more light on the death upon finalising the probe.
In a letter, seen by the Daily Nation, the management at the facility has been asked to explain the circumstances that led to the death of the 60 infants.
The facility’s Medical Superintendent Dr Jesse Ngugi has been asked to prepare a comprehensive report to account for the deaths. The management has until Friday to present facts about the deaths failure to which an unspecified action will be taken against the management
“I have written to the hospital to submit a report on the deaths by Friday,” said Dr Yumbya.
Dr Ngugi last week revealed that out of the 60 reported cases, 30 infants died in December last year, 20 in January and 10 in February.
This comes after former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo called for urgent investigations into the matter, noting that the cases were sad and unacceptable.
