Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi has confirmed that Governor Mike Sonko forwarded Miguna Miguna’s name as his nominee for deputy governor position.
The post became vacant after Polycarp Igathe, who is now Equity Bank's Chief Commercial Officer, resigned four months ago.
On Wednesday evening, a letter signed by Governor Sonko to Elachi leaked on social media, sparking debate among Kenyans on whether it was genuine or fake.
Speaking on Hot 96 FM Thursday morning, Elachi said, "The governor has given us a nominee. We will follow the law. The Constitution is clear that a deputy governor needs to be a Kenyan citizen. I would tell Miguna to first clear his issues with the Kenyan government. He is Canadian. That procedure can take us three to four months.”
Miguna’s lawyer Cliff Ombeta, who was captured holding the letter, on Wednesday said that Governor Sonko has settled on the embattled nominated opposition politician as his deputy.

Miguna, who was deported by the government to Canada in March, canceled his planned return to the country yesterday.
"I was determined to arrive home on schedule, however, just before my departure, I reluctantly canceled my flight to Nairobi and postponed my next arrival date. We will provide you with my new arrival date as soon as the court gives further directions on this matter," said Miguna on Wednesday in a statement.
Miguna has always described Governor Sonko as "unfit to hold public office", and he cannot work with him.
The firebrand lawyer is yet to respond to the nomination.
