In early January, Hivisasa covered a story from Matuingulu, Machakos county regarding uncollected garbage. The garbage had been uncollected for several weeks in the process inconveniencing the locals.
The story was published by Hivisasa writer Lovely Mueni who is based in Machakos. Mueni covered the story after receiving a tip from the locals.
The writer interviewed some locals who explained how the garbage had affected them. It emerged that the situation had been worsened by the heavy rains pounding the area.
The bins were recently acquired under the Kenya Urban Support Program (KUSP) which is funded by the World Bank for three municipalities namely Machakos, Tala/Kangundo and Mavoko.
Three days after the story was covered, the county government managed to collect the garbage. The writer secured an interview with Matungulu sub-county administrator Peter Mutungi who explained the reason behind the delay.
Mutungi noted that the county had experienced a small hitch that led to the delay in collecting the garbage.
The official promised that the county authority had put in place the necessary measures to ensure the bins are emptied on time to avoid inconveniencing residents.
